Here's looking at you kid: Warner Brothers is turning 100 years old this year, and may we suggest it's time for them to get out their whistle and put their lips together and blow. We could not be more thrilled to tell you about this brand new spectacular release! If you have not joined the Humphrey Bogart party, what can we say except better late than never. The Maltese Falcon, along with Casablanca, are absolute must-sees for any red-blooded American of taste, as well as those foreign born. And, unique to us, you should know that Bogart was a MANHATTANITE.
In the Maltese Falcon, it's not who you know it's WHOM YOU KNOW and you ought to know Charles V and be able to detect who's telling the truth here! The Maltese Falcon sets the standard for the classic Film Noir. Bogart is at his best and his career was just starting to crescendo! It was done right before Casablanca, previously featured here on Whom You Know. The fabulously talented Mary Astor makes a seamless transition to talkies in The Maltese Falcon and the tight, intelligent direction by John Huston cements this as an essential classic absolute must-see. Without getting political, this movie shows teenage angst is nothing new and neither is the topic of guns and mental health. Above all, this is a celebration of the excellence of James Dean and the 1974 tv special included remembering him is truly extraordinary and essential viewing. Screen tests, wardrobe tests and deleted scenes also add to your movie education and amusement.
It's not who you know but whom you meet, and of these three movies we have only met one person in them and that's Paul Newman because he had the need for speed and was an amazing race car driver. Way before Whom You Know and way before we ever reviewed or saw any of his movies, we met him in real life at Lime Rock Park because he liked to race his Corvette there. Cool Hand Luke is another obvious classic and another deserving candle on the Warner Brother's cake this year, and now we appreciate Newman's acting ability too.

The Maltese Falcon
Academy Award® winner Humphrey Bogart stars in this classic film noir as tough San Francisco private detective Sam Spade in the classic, convoluted story of Spade's involvement with a deadly band of international thieves who will lie, double cross and murder to obtain a small, jewel-encrusted statue known as The Maltese Falcon. Sam Spade's (Bogart) partner, Miles Archer (Jerome Cowan), accepts a job protecting a young woman (Mary Astor). Neither Spade nor Archer believe the woman or the story she tells them, but they do believe her money. Then, when Archer is murdered, Spade's search for the killer drags him in the web of lies and death spun by the desperate people seeking The Maltese Falcon.
The 1941film is directed by John Huston in his directorial debut. The screenplay is by Huston and is based on the 1930 novel by Dashiell Hammett. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Gladys George, Peter Lorre, Barton MacLane, Lee Patrick, and Sydney Greenstreet.

Cool Hand Luke
Academy Award® winner Paul Newman stars with George Kennedy in this story of a man who will not surrender to authority--even at the cost of his life. When Luke Jackson (Newman) is sentenced to a Southern prison for a minor infraction, his intelligence, calm under pressure and inability to accept defeat soon gain him the respect of his fellow inmates on the chain gang--and the nickname Cool Hand Luke. But they also earn Luke the enmity of the warden, who cannot allow any inmate to challenge his authority. When Luke's mother dies, he decides to escape ... and he will not allow anyone to stop him.

Rebel Without a Cause
James Dean stars in a movie that shocked the United States with a performance that still electrifies the screen twenty-five years after his untimely death prior to the film's release.
