Three New Performances in The Art of the Score: Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, the Movie Music of Terence Blanchard, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Two Performances in NY Phil @ Noon Organ Recital on Artist Spotlight Very Young People’s Concerts, at Merkin Hall Additional Updates: Details of Artists and Repertoire for Orchestral Concerts, Including Conductors and Hosts for Young People’s Concerts at 100 and Repertoire for New York Philharmonic Ensembles at Merkin Hall The New York Philharmonic has announced updates to its 2023–24 season. Updates to the Orchestra’s concerts: • In the US Premiere of The Elements, conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, September 29–October 1, 2023, the title of Jessie Montgomery’s work has changed from Ether to Space. The Elements is commissioned by Joshua Bell. • Artist and repertoire information added to the season’s Young People’s Concerts (YPCs): o The conductors / co-hosts will be Thomas Wilkins, November 18, 2023, (Time Capsule), Jerry Hou, January 20, 2024, (Fantasy and Imagination), and Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser (in his NY Phil debut), April 20, 2024 (Composing Inclusion). Kwamé Ryan, previously announced as conductor for the May 4, 2024, YPC (Celebration), will also serve as co-host. o The YPC on April 20, 2024, conducted by Bartholomew-Poyser, will feature World Premieres by Nicolás Lell Benavides and Andrés Soto — commissioned through Composing Inclusion, a partnership among the NY Phil, the Juilliard School Preparatory Division, and American Composers Forum — and selections from Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, on a program in which the NY Phil will perform side-by-side with the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra. 2023–24 Season Updates / 2 • The newly added performances as part of The Art of the Score are: o The Movie Music of Terence Blanchard, presented by Lincoln Center in collaboration with the NY Phil, January 28, 2024. The Orchestra performs alongside Blanchard (trumpet) and the E-Collective in selections from Blanchard’s original scores for the films of director Spike Lee, including Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, and Da 5 Bloods. o E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, directed by Steven Spielberg, will take place May 17– 19, 2024, with Constantine Kitsopoulos conducting John Williams’s original score live to film. o In addition, organist and composer Cameron Carpenter will give the New York Premiere of his original solo organ score for Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang, performed live to film, February 6, 2024. • The performance of Holst’s The Planets, conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk, November 22 and 24–25, 2024, will feature The Dessoff Choirs, Malcolm J. Merriweather, director. • Long Yu returns to conduct the Lunar New Year Concert and Gala, February 20, 2024. Programming will be announced at a later date. • The Spring Gala has been moved from May 15, 2024, to April 24, 2024. Programming will be announced at a later date. • Soprano Amanda Forsythe and Musica Sacra, Kent Tritle, director, perform in the Mozart Requiem, conducted by van Zweden, May 23–25 and 28, 2024. • The Free Memorial Day Concert, Presented by the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, May 27, 2024, features Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Copland’s Quiet City, featuring English horn Ryan Roberts and Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin as soloists. As previously announced, the concert also features Brahms’s Symphony No. 4. Updates to NY Phil presentations: • Artists and repertoire are announced for NY Phil @ Noon (October 20 and November 2, 2023), which this season will present soloists performing on instruments not usually heard in a traditional orchestra: accordionist Hanzhi Wang and mandolinist Avi Avital, October 20, 2023, and cimbalom player Jenő Lisztes, November 2, 2023. Tickets for the series remain choose-what-you-pay, with a recommended price of $10.00. • Repertoire has been confirmed for the season’s New York Philharmonic Ensembles at Merkin Hall (November 19 and December 10, 2023, and January 14, February 4, April 2023–24 Season Updates / 3 7, and April 21, 2024). The series will include the World Premiere of Melinda Wagner’s Elegy Flywheel — commissioned by the NY Phil through Project 19 — on April 7, 2024. • The Holiday Brass concert, December 16 and 17, 2023, will feature New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion, with former NY Phil Principal Trumpet Philip Smith returning to conduct, host, and perform. • Organist Cameron Carpenter will perform on Artist Spotlight, February 7, 2024, at the Wu Tsai Theater, on a program that will include his own arrangements of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. • Pianist Herbie Hancock will perform on Artist Spotlight, March 26, 2024, at the Wu Tsai Theater, programming for which will be announced at a later date. • This season’s Very Young People’s Concerts (VYPCs), which will take place in Merkin Hall at Kaufman Music Center, again feature Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young as host and Musicians from the New York Philharmonic. The season’s theme will be Philharmonic Playdates, with concerts taking place March 16, May 18, and June 1, 2024. • The October 27, 2023, Sound On concert, conducted by Brad Lubman, will include John Zorn’s for your eyes only. The previously announced piece by Kinan Azmeh and Layale Chaker, which receives its New York Premiere in this concert, is titled Dawning for improvising musicians and orchestra.
