COTERIE Concludes September Edition Having Brought Premier Assortment of International, Denim and Sustainable Categories to New York Market and MAGIC New York Brought Hundreds of Emerging and Top Established Brands Together

COTERIE New York, the contemporary and advanced contemporary women's wholesale fashion event which brings together brands, retailers, experts and influencers in the fashion capital of the U.S. concluded its bi-annual event with three days of energetic buying, community conversations and exploration of new brands.  Whom You Know has covered this show and Magic for many of our nearly 15 years and we were honored to rejoin the festivities and learn about brands new to us and we thank them for their continued inclusion.  We would like to hear about men's fashion trade shows as we understand Market and Project no longer exist and we liked those shows too in the past.

COTERIE New York is where relationships are fostered on an individual and intimate community level, and where the industry can converge to share information, grow and evolve. Born in New York, COTERIE placed the city at the forefront as New York based designers were the primary focus of COTERIE’s GALLERY section of the show floor. Featured brands upcoming on Whom You Know will be contacted through the brand owners only through a selective proposal process based on meritocracy alone for both Coterie and Magic.

The COTERIE international community represented 36 nations through over 400 global brands with collections spanning Spring/Summer 2024 swim, and of course our favorite swim brand is Miraclesuit by Mover and Shaker Sandra Davidoff, resort and vacation inspired apparel and accessories to outerwear, footwear and new styles of contemporary clothing. The strong international presence creates opportunities for retailers to find new styles as brands from Canada, Italy, Korea, Turkey, Brazil and France brought their upcoming selections to New York.

Premium denim is a core component of COTERIE, and this season there was a robust selection contributing to the return of the denim focus. The expanded premium denim assortment consisted of AG Jeans and the new addition of Moussy Vintage and Triarchy. The denim presence continued into the sustainability activation on the show floor with an interactive augmented reality activation in collaboration with Arcadia Earth, allowing attendees to explore and activate an exhibit dedicated to sustainable denim practices. Through the holograms information is shared on processes for indigo dyeing, water consumption, cotton cultivation, chemical usage and new technologies were brought to life while unlocking hidden gems, environmental facts and lifelike animations.

The fashion industry gathered to hear from experts on moderated panels and engaging community conversations. This season, COTERIE included Steven Kolb who sat down for a fireside chat to discuss working with the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the CFDA's contribution to American designers.

“Every season COTERIE continues to evolve, focusing on our fundamental pillars of sustainability, community and technology. This September, the event showcased a robust range of new brands from emerging designers, eco-conscious designs, and premium denim. With over twenty percent of brands being new to the show, COTERIE offers unparalleled opportunities for brand discovery. COTERIE increasingly expands the offering in nearly every key category to connect retailers with a comprehensive assortment,” says Kelly Helfman, President, Informa Markets Fashion.

Retailers who attended COTERIE New York include Revolve, Shopbop, Monkees, Otte, Hartly, Julian Gold, Ballin’s, B Barnett, Gus Mayer, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Anthropologie and Bloomingdale’s. Retailers could discover a premier selection of new and emerging brands, over 20 percent of all brands, and over 800 returning designers in women’s apparel, accessories and footwear.

In other fashion news on Whom You Know, Mover and Shaker Edward Tricomi the first and last word in hair anywhere in the world has opened his new hotspot salon on 76th and Madison above Zitomer and we were thrilled to be at his recent soiree and also you should all be excited to hear about our friend Fashion Legend Robert Maslin and his hot new career move!

COTERIE returns to New York in February 2024. To stay up to date with more information regarding the 2024 event, visit www.coteriefashionevents.com.

Nearly 120 emerging designers featured, including D’Amelio Footwear, day + moon, Ora Ana, and Sofie the Label.

MAGIC New York, the bi-annual three-day fashion event showcasing young contemporary and modern sportswear styles, concluded on September 21. Over 400 brands showcased Spring/Summer ‘24 collections, attracting domestic and international retailers providing attendees with a curated lineup of must-see brands together under one roof to focus on discovery and education.

The fashion community continues to gather at MAGIC New York to discover brands and connect with the industry on an intimate level. The event offered a wide assortment of styles in apparel, footwear, accessories as well as home, gift and beauty. Over 30 percent of brands showcased for the first time in MAGIC New York as retailers look to incorporate inventory that is up to date with the latest trends. This season lounge sets, florals, bright layers, varsity jackets and denim were top trends for upcoming spring/summer and many brands incorporated unique perspectives into their designs. Cotton Candy LA, D’Amelio Footwear, Miou Muse, La Dame the Label, Latte Love, Lexbreezy Hawaii, Sanita Clogs and day + moon were among the recent additions to the NY brand line up.

This season MAGIC New York introduced educational programming which brought in industry experts to share perspectives on relevant topics covering size inclusivity, trend forecasting and sustainability. MAGIC keeps the fashion community in touch with the latest insights and innovations through these types of offerings to support retailers and brands in finding additional avenues to gain knowledge and engage with customers.

“MAGIC New York provides unparalleled value to our attendees including a robust lineup of brands that retailers can find only while walking the show floor. In addition to brand discovery, the newly launched education and sustainability initiatives allowed attendees to gain comprehensive insights into the entire industry, with topics covering size inclusivity, sustainability and trend forecasting,” says Jordan Rudow, Vice President, MAGIC.

The first-ever MAGIC Verified Sustainable program offered brands the opportunity to participate in an evaluation and verification program that provided a ranking based on sustainability and social good practices. Brands enter the program to become ranked based on set environmental and ethical business standards provided by the UN, creating visibility into truly sustainable businesses and increasing transparency between brands, retailers and eventually consumers. Verified sustainable brands that hit all 17 of the UN’s sustainable goals in MAGIC included Mita Eyewear, Bee Bella Buzz, Sal Rosa and Soruka US.

“We recognize that we can make a significant impact when it comes to sustainability practices in the fashion industry. This verification program was created to educate, support and guide brands and retailers on the process of becoming more sustainable and aware of environmental and ethical business practices. We anticipate the MAGIC Verified Sustainable program to grow season over season, as the fashion industry turns to trusted resources to deliver transparency to consumers.” Jordan Rudow, Vice President, MAGIC.

Thousands of retailers ranging from single specialty boutiques to big box department and chain stores were in attendance including Free People, Urban Outfitters, Tilly’s, South Moon Under, Apricot Lane, Macy’s, Dunes Resort, Gallery Jules, Bryand, Essex NYC and Beginning Boutique, shopping for next seasons collections and seeking out new lines and styles for Spring/Summer 2024.

SOURCING at MAGIC, co-located with MAGIC New York, hosted exhibiting manufacturers in apparel, footwear, accessories, fabric, trim and packaging such as Franky and Rick, Dolphin Apparel and Dynamic Sportswear. Tory Burch, Rag & Bone, Macy’s, Kenneth Cole and Away Travel were among buyers on the SOURCING show floor. The sustainability gallery in SOURCING at MAGIC featured fully verified brands that have shifted their business practices to meet all 17 sustainability standards, providing insight into brands eco-friendly practices, materials and processes used in the creation of garments.
