The Federation of Haute Couture and Fashion (FHCM) brings together French and international creative houses selected for their creativity and their unique and innovative know-how. The FHCM is both a Professional Organization serving its Members and an Event Organization which coordinates Paris Fashion Week® and Haute Couture Week.
OUR HISTORY
A story that begins in 1868
At the origin of the Federation is the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Created in 1868 under the name of Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, des Confectioneurs et des Taileurs pour Dame, it became the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne on December 14, 1910. Following the decision of January 23, 1945 relating to the creation of the legally controlled name “Haute Couture”, it becomes the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Only houses benefiting from the designation which can be used by companies approved each year by a dedicated commission held under the aegis of the Ministry of Industry sit there.
During the 1960s, the movement of fashion designers who joined forces with the great couturiers emerged. Thus the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode was created on October 8, 1973.
That same day the Chambre Syndicale de la Mode Masculine was born.
The dynamic brought by these three Trade Union Chambers led to the creation on the same day of the French Federation of Couture, Ready-to-Wear Couturiers and Fashion Designers. On June 29, 2017, it became the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.
Haute Couture, a French exception
Haute Couture is a French exception and as the name of the Federation indicates, it is at the heart of the Fashion ecosystem. Of great modernity, it is a permanent bridge between a tradition of excellence in know-how and a contemporaneity of creation today integrating manufacturing techniques at the cutting edge of innovation.
The Haute Couture collections are presented twice a year in January and July.
Because of its extraordinary character, it is given a separate status. Since 2010 its official calendar has welcomed the High Jewelry Houses members of the Federation. This approach allows for synchronicity of presentations, but also to unfold the history of 2 sectors with exceptional know-how and in perpetual reinvention.
The origin of Haute Couture is attributed to Charles Frédéric WORTH who created the first true Couture House in 1858 at 7 rue de la Paix in Paris. Before that Rose Bertin, Marie-Antoinette's "Minister of Fashion", had prefigured it and was the first to begin to liberate the female body while adorning her creations with embroidery, lace and rose petals. Addition.
Following a decree published on January 23, 1945, the name “Haute Couture” became a legally controlled name. Only houses and companies approved each year by a dedicated commission led by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, held under the aegis of the Ministry of Industry, can benefit from it.
Preferred area of handwork carried out in the workshops of the houses, a laboratory of ideas and techniques, a space where creativity can be freely expressed, Haute Couture, whose international reputation has never waned, contributes to make Paris the fashion capital of the world. Haute Couture is distinguished by the uniqueness of the models created each year, and the individualization of these models which are then made to measure for the clientele.
Haute Couture, like contemporary High Jewelry, sometimes disrupts and disrupts academic forms to adapt to the times. They bring an undeniable addition of sensoriality and imagination in addition to remaining extremely modern, often drawing on new technologies.
Haute Couture and fashion today are inexhaustible areas of expression and creativity. Both constitute a major pole of the French economy. During Paris Fashion Week®, the capital becomes for a few days one of the most important financial hubs in the world.
