Snap to the Red Snapper and traditional beet salad is a must!
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and the newest restaurant owners to us are son and father team Boris and Yuriy Kandov, who hail from Kazahstan, shown above, and came to New York in 1992. On December 12, 2023 they opened Sip and Sizzle, and it's absolutely fantastic! We were delighted to meet them and experience their talents and especially if you are Glatt Kosher, add this to your list and if you like a great dinner obviously add it to your list too. Peachy is not Jewish and you don't need to be either to experience this talent.
The name of the restaurant is derived from Sip (a verb that will be happening here once they get their liquor license) and Sizzle, indicative of its newness and novelty. Also kebabs sizzle in their pans...and we were graciously greeted:
The Beef Samsa got the party started, and the Puff Pasty with spicy, but not TOO spicy, tomato sauce and of course beef is ideal in this chilly weather, and the flavor was enticing. Next, meet Kibbeh, below. Bulgar wheat croquette is stuffed with seasoned minced beef and served with tahina sauce.
One of our favorite edibles on our inaugural visit was the traditional beet salad. The quality and the simplicity are remarkable, and the nutritional hit will keep you healthy. Also we were impressed overall with the general attention to detail we saw as well as the level of cleanliness.
The Chicken Portobello Salad was outstanding in size and quality both. The chicken was grilled to perfection and juicy, and they listened and put the dressing the side for Ms. Pretty Picky. Mixed greens, tomatoes, olives, cucumbers, portobello mushrooms and of course grilled chicken breast made this party on a plate one you want for your dinner! It is spectacularly fresh and made to order.
Next, the Plov is something we never remember having before and that is really saying something. It is a Bucharian traditional dish we understand, and the rice, carrots and beef combined with their heritage culinary talents make this a dish you absolutely must have. It was also one of our favorites and we cannot wait to eat it again. It could become habit forming!
Note we do not edit pictures, ever.
In fact if you ask to look at our pictures or ask us to edit them, we will not publish on you.
We only publish the truth on what we experience, and we'd encourage you to go back in this column and see how long it's been since we featured someone new, and in particular, someone new to everyone and not just new to us. Remember, we publish only when it is a good experience. If it is not a good experience, we say nothing.
Obviously, Peachy is a Deegan, not a vegan.
To have a successful restaurant in New York, you have got to have a great cheeseburger and they have one here. The Sizzle Burger is 85/15 sirloin to fat.
Boris specifically adds a crispy chicken patty along with the beef and it is served with vegan cheese (non-dairy, this is part of the Glatt Kosher philosophy/religion). If you have questions about Glatt Kosher, they will gladly answer and it has to do with the way the meat is slaughtered, the way the vegetables are cleaned, and keeping certain items separate from each other.
Also they have a Mashgiach-which means Food Rabbi which is a totally separate profession from Rabbi.
Above, Steak Pargit is not actual steak: it is Dark Chicken Marinated with Herbs. Pargit we believe is an Israeli term, and in Peachy's limited Glatt Kosher experience but extensive steakhouse experience, it reminded her of Chicken Teriyaki at Chuck's Steakhouse in the Hartford Civic Center before Whalers games....you cannot do either of those activities anymore! It's delicious, moist and flavorful but don't expect it to be beef. Finally, the fish selection on the menu is solid and we opted for the Red Snapper, as we think it is underrepresented on Manhattan menus overall. It was served whole and absolutely spectacular! Served with green beans and mejadra (way it is prepared, Middle Eastern culinary term) rice, this was another favorite of the night. It was fresh and delicious.
Sip and Sizzle is Terrific Takeout and we look forward to seeing what they do next!
