#ReadThis #TheEdge by @DavidBaldacci
The 6:20 Man, which we previously Highly Recommended, is without a doubt our favorite Baldacci character, so we are pleased as punch to see him back in the second book in the series: The Edge. This is absolutely no sophomore act. Our review is somewhat cryptic on purpose because the idea is that you read it for yourself!!!
David Baldacci is without a doubt the best thriller author today, and with this series, is getting right up there with Agatha Christie. His number one priority in our humble opinion, readers, should be writing the third book in this series!
If you've been reading closely, you know that Baldacci is not a New Yorker-he's all Virginia, and neither is Peachy, who spent the vast majority of her first 22 years in New England. The Edge takes place in the great state of MAINE! Everyone should be quite interested in any beach location for a escape inbetween covers, particularly by the time you've made it through a northern winter in February. The Edge speaks well to the authenticity of New England and Maine.
In The Edge, you'll find quality descriptions characteristic of Baldacci's style and talent, like on page 32 with the Jocelyn Point description, in particular the windows. The Grimm description on page 105 is also great.
David Baldacci excels at dialogue as well, particularly on page 135: "But we live in a troubled society...maybe you don't know a damn thing." Obviously readers, you've got to read the book for yourself to see the whole quote! We shall not spoil a thing for you.
The plot has the mysterious thrilling twists and turns that you've come to expect to baffle you, and we seriously doubt you'll have the capacity to guess what happens. You need more clarity on enemies!
Baldacci's hallmark of quality writing by himself is another aspect that sets him apart from his peers, who can senselessly sell out their name to co-write with a lesser author.
What we do not like: the grammar mistake on page 81. It should be FEWER than 24 hours. Really, Baldacci should engage our proofreading services.
We like the philosophical style this has in parts, like No Man's Land on page 323.
The Body Will Not Go Where The Mind Has Not Been. (p. 61)
Think about it, and crack open this absolute winner and the number one book you should be reading right now.
The Edge is Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.
The 6:20 Man is back, dropped by his handlers into a small coastal town in Maine to solve the murder of a CIA agent who knew America’s dirtiest secrets—can Travis Devine uncover the truth before his time runs out?
When CIA operative Jenny Silkwell is murdered in rural Maine, government officials have immediate concerns over national security. Her laptop and phone were full of state secrets that, in the wrong hands, endanger the lives of countless operatives. In need of someone who can solve the murder quickly and retrieve the missing information, the U.S. government knows just the chameleon they can call on.
Ex-Army Ranger Travis Devine spent his time in the military preparing to take on any scenario, followed by his short-lived business career chasing shadows in the deepest halls of power, so his analytical mind makes him particularly well-suited for complex, high-stakes tasks. Taking down the world’s largest financial conspiracy proved his value, and in comparison, this case looks straightforward. Except small towns hold secrets and Devine finds himself an outsider again.
Devine must ingratiate himself with locals who have trusted each other their whole lives, and who distrust outsiders just as much. Dak, Jenny’s brother, who’s working to revitalize the town. Earl, the retired lobsterman who found Jenny’s body. And Alex, Jenny’s sister with a dark past of her own. As Devine gets to know the residents of Putnam, Maine, answers seem to appear and then transform into more questions. There’s a long history of secrets and those who will stop at nothing to keep them from being exposed. Leaving Devine with no idea who he can trust… and who wants him dead.
