E! NEWS EXCLUSIVE: Lionel Richie Reacts to Carrie Underwood Joining Him and Luke Bryan on American Idol
 “E! NEWS” AIRS 11:00 PM ET/PT ON E!

Days after the "Before He Cheats" singer—who won season four of the ABC competition series in 2005—confirmed she's replacing Katy Perry at the judges' table, Lionel is weighing in on his new costar.
"It makes a lot of sense," he told E! News Aug. 5 while attending the Grammy Museum's screening of The Greatest Night in Pop. "It's not someone we have to get used to. And the fact that she has a great story, she came from American Idol." (For more from Lionel, watch E! News Aug. 6 at 11 p.m.)

"What a great judge," Lionel continued, "now we don't have to explain anymore, 'We know how you feel.' As artists, we know how you feel, but we've never been in that oval that says, 'American Idol.' She's been there, done that."
Lionel also hopes Carrie has a great sense of humor as she sits alongside him and fellow judge Luke Bryan.
"Just be a ham sandwich like the two of us," he said with a laugh. "Welcome to the ham sandwich squad."
"It's gonna be an amazing show," Lionel told E!. "Probably for the first five or six shows, to see her face and see how she deals with uncle Luke sitting next to her, saying anything on his mind. I'm gonna love it, I'm loving it."

For Carrie, who announced her Idol return on Good Morning America Aug. 2, the show feels like home.
"There's so many people that still work on the show that were there when I was a contestant," she said. "And I feel like being on both sides of the coin I'll be hopefully able to offer some insight."

As for the kind of judge Carrie thinks she'll be?

"I do have a big 'problem,' I can't lie," she explained. "I feel like I'll be very honest but hopefully I can be very constructive and encouraging."

But Carrie—who shares sons Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5, with husband Mike Fisher—won't be hard on the contestants."
That’s not in her personality. As she joked, "Just ask my kids."

While we wait for a new season, keep reading to see where more Idol stars are today...
