Peachy Deegan loves baked stuffed shrimp with crabmeat and especially when it comes with a complete dinner of excellence!
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we know Skylight Diner by George and Teddy Papaioannou, original owners! Skylight Diner began April 1, 1996, no April Fooling. We met them way back in 2012 when they earned their first feature, they even were featured in Tasty Tidbits, and they earned a coveted spot in Peachy's Picks in 2013.
Not all diners in Manhattan are created equally.
Some are just superior, and allow us to remind you exactly why this place excels.
The menu is extensive, as you might expect. We began with the sensationally warm Chicken Quesadilla, which is emblazoned with golden brown perfection. Inside you'll be delighted by peppers, onions, mushrooms and mozzarella oozing on the chicken that hits the spot on a cold day. It was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside exactly how we wanted it. We really have to love you to go out when it is this cold and we can assure you, this cuisine is worth it!
The salad selection looks like a lineup of NHL All Stars. We narrowed it down to three.
And of course you know they are so close to MSG, and there is absolutely no reason why you would eat at the Javits Center when this is so close.
The Greek Salad was a festive sight in January with its Mixed Greens, Feta Cheese, Black Olives, Anchovies, Dolmadakia and dressing on the side as Ms. Pretty Picky requested. In all cases when she requested the dressing on the side, it was on the side.
Our favorite salad might be the Popeye! Naturally, it's spinach-based. And the bacon that joins it is devilishly delicious and amazing!!! Sliced egg, tomato, superior marinated artichoke hearts and mushrooms finished with seasoned croutons set the standard for quality salads for dinner! We totally loved it and it was just as spectacular as the last time. Finally, the Grilled Portobello was majestic with its warm portobellos reigning over the mixed garden greens, wonderful marinated string beans, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, red onions, olives and triumphant roasted peppers. Note all pictures are unedited and the truth is everything is this vivid and delicious as you would hope!
Sandwich sensations, notably written "overstuffed" on the menu, has a lot of depth and we narrowed it down to one that should not surprise you given our proud Irish American roots: Ruby Reuben! We also like that in all cases, Mesclun may be substituted for French Fries, and this is of course healthier. Heaped with succulent corned beef (you could also get pastrami but we got corned beef), sauerkraut and melted swiss cheese, this hits the spot on a cold day like no other. If you are someone that also once loved going to The Carnegie Deli for corned beef, here's somewhere else to go to! (Obviously the Carnegie Deli closed much to our dismay.)
We are thrilled to tell you the Baked Stuffed Shrimp with CRABMEAT is still a winner at Skylight, and six shrimp gloriously await your presence in an amazing dinner extravaganza. Another huge plus about Skylight is that they actually give you a whole dinner which is rare: you are served potato, vegetable and mixed seasonal green salad or soup. We cannot remember the last time we had such an excellent baked potato: it was pure perfection. The broccoli was robust and crisp, and all of this is what dinner should be.
It's no secret we love Chicken Parm, and we had it with a wonderful glass of Cabernet, one of Peachy's favorites. The chicken totally hit the spot on a cold day and it waltzed beautifully with rigatoni (what Peachy picked. You do have other pasta options...) in a classic marinara. The Chef's choice Skylight Delights are served with a mixed seasonal green salad (what we picked) or a cup of soup, which maybe we should have picked given the temperature outside! The Chicken Parm is impressive and delicious and superior to other diner Chicken Parms.
Finally, the Greek Spinach Pie was humungous and the spinach and feta cheese in a filo next mix nutritional impact with cheesy goodness that again is a winter essential!
Manager Thomas, below, was a delight to meet and Miguel the waiter was also totally on the ball.
Skylight Diner continues to be Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.
