Happiness is a Ribeye Medium Rare with Bernaise Sauce at Frankie and Johnnie's!
Drumroll please. Peachy does not fake smile. That is how she feels about this steak.
This is the first Frankie and Johnnie's feature since covid!!!!
We are absolutely thrilled to return, and check it out on our YouTube!
We first featured Frankie and Johnnie's in 2012 and they immediately were a Peachy's Pick, hitting the ground running. We returned in early 2017 for another formal review, and love it so much we would just stop by and say hi sometimes to the late owner Peter Chimos who absolutely was one of our most favorite restaurant owners ever. It earned another review later in 2017, early in 2018, early in 2019, and the last time we saw Peter was later in 2019. Here's what Peter said about working with us and we were always honored to work with Frankie and Johnnie's and they are back and just as amazing as always but we are sad that Peter passed; interestingly, Peachy previously reviewed this exact location in years earlier with B. Smith in 2011 who is probably also reading upstairs with Peter.
Today, Gus and Billy Chimos own Frankie and Johnnie's, Peter's sons.
General Manager Adrian Preda who runs everything day to day was a pleasure to work with and he started in 2002 at Frankie and Johnnie's. It is rare to see a General Manager in Manhattan with this kind of commanding staying power.
Peachy Deegan and Adrian Preda
EVERYBODY loved Peter from Presidents to the biggest stars on the planet and Peter loved everyone; he personally cared about each and every single guest that walked in the door. This doesn't happen everywhere in New York and he was an absolute treasure.
Obviously the cuisine is amazing, and we are getting to that.
Pictures speak louder than words and 41, Paul Newman, Billy Crystal, Kathie Lee Gifford and many, many more loved Peter and Frankie and Johnnie's too.
Of course they have their own engraved knives which work like a charm:
Eating at Frankie and Johnnie's is a constant parade of hits one after another and we are so thrilled that they are 99 years old. We can't wait to see what they do next year!
Green salads are a big objective of ours year-round, and the produce is fresh even in the dead of February at Frankie and Johnnie's. Ms. Uberpicky asked for the dressing on the side and that is exactly how it came. The F and J salad is composed of lettuce, red and green bell peppers, mushrooms, tomato and cucumber. Usually it comes with oil and vinegar but Peachy chose ranch; she got both because at Frankie and Johnnie's, you can have it all!
The angel on her shoulder ordered the salad.
The devil on her shoulder ordered the SMOKED APPLEWOOD BACON STEAK. It is even better than you would imagine and the smell alone is intoxicating; it should be pure torture for you readers to look at it without being able to scratch and sniff it like a sticker from the 1980's. You will have to order it yourself because you will not find a better bacon steak anywhere in its carnivorous succulence; this should not surprise you as they have had 99 years to perfect their meat triumphs.
From every angle it is a dream. If for some reason you bring someone with you that doesn't eat steak, there are other excellent options too. The Chicken Parm is a classic and is still fantastic and just amazing on a cold day to warm you up and give your palate a hug with cheesy tomato goodness emblazoned on perfectly pounded and breaded chicken with pasta singing backup.
Shrimp scampi remains a bestseller and five of them line up at your attention, the favorite number of Coco Chanel. Beautifully butterflied, the shrimp are seared just right and not overdone or underdone like you might find at lesser spots.
Everything at Frankie and Johnnie's is a triumphant classic, and the atmosphere is classy and we love the music. Yes, you read that right. We nearly never say that however the music they choose is exactly what Peachy listens to in real life. We've published on music over 1,000 times in our column New York Notes and are honored to work with The Recording Academy (Grammys). Not only is the content spot-on but the volume is ambiant and not at all loud; this is also rare as loud music can really ruin your dinner plus your dinner conversations. It goes without saying that this is among the classiest venues in Peachy's Picks.
A 24oz with the bone Rib Eye Steak is the gold medal of dinners in Manhattan, and particularly if you are coming in to see a show, this is so close on West 46th Street on Restaurant Row. It is hard to imagine any show being better than this steak. It was perfectly medium rare and every ounce melted in our mouth and each bite was exactly as sublime as we remembered. This is really no surprise as Peter is now the angel sitting at the bar that you can't see in person. The bearnaise is Peachy's personal favorite version in all of New York right now.
Roasted Cauliflower Au Gratin, a bestseller, is creamy and delicious and Brussels Sprouts sauteed in garlic and oil are a must! Plus, we believe cruciferous vegetables are particularly healthy! Each sets off the steak quite nicely and is gorgeously presented in stylish cast iron.
Perfectly medium rare as ordered:
The service is top-notch and we were delighted with waiters Daniel and Abraham whom we met for the first time. Yes, you must leave room for dessert because although Peachy thought she loves apple pie the most among apple desserts, this changed her mind and she actually now likes this exact Apple Strudel the most a la mode. There's not too much pastry or too much spice which is an error lesser venues make; the apples are positively triumphant with a hint of walnuts and raisins in proper proportion.
Frankie and Johnnie's continues to be Highly Recommended.
We love it here.
