Be sure to ask the Easter Bunny for Garlic Shrimp and Cabernet by Jesus Martinez!
And close with the Apple Tart absolutely.
A surefire hit is the Grilled Salmon, exceptionally fresh and flavorful
It's almost Easter weekend and it's time to say CANELONES readers! It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we know Jesus Martinez, Godfather of the Galician diet and Founder, Owner and Executive Chef of Alcala. A Peachy's Pick Since 2012, Alcala impresses us year-round and they were last featured earlier this year in the winter of 2025. Luxuriously appointed as they bathe in tomato and Bechamel Sauce, the Canelones pay homage to spinach and shrimp and are a simply sensational appetizer any time of year. They are a firm second favorite of Peachy Deegan at Alcala on the hit list of edibles and there is no other place that can compare in this dish ever. We suggest you learn this delicious word too by eating it.
Of course Jesus is famous for making his own olive oil too.
Yes, that is his face on the bottle, kind of like Paul Newman.
Ensalada de Navarra boasts outstanding freshness and is substantial in size. Bursting with nutrition, this classic upscale salad is composed of fine Grilled Asparagus, riveting Piquillo Peppers, luscious tomatoes, welcoming Idiazabal cheese and Mesclun Salad. The Scallion Vinaigrette is sublime and we trust Alcala to apply the dressing! How often do you hear us say that! Nearly never.
Chuletitas de Cordero are tastefully appointed and it's wonderful to know that they are sourced from New England! Peachy is also sourced from New England. These gorgeous beauties are a harbinger of spring, enhanced further with garlic and roasted red peppers. These two lamb chops are the tapas version.
It's your lucky day if when you visit you see the Lubina Mediterrana on the menu!
Galician style filet of Black Sea Bass with their famous scalloped potatoes is just as exclusive as the American Express Black Card. Carrots, asparagus and zucchini are also celebrated in this champion entree that is a ebullient commencement of the season.
In the world according to Peachy Deegan, you cannot pass go and collect $200 at Alcala without trying the Garlic Shrimp, which dance like sugarplums in her head nonstop. Garlic Shrimp is an amazing culinary feat historically on the site (remember Barbie at Solera (since closed) with Rufino) and there is no better incarnation of Gambas al Ajillo than at Alcala; don't miss it in action on video: Shrimp in a sizzling garlic sauce. If you want to bribe Peachy or get on her good side feed her these and the Canelones.
Dining perfection!
Be sure to wish Jesus a Happy Birthday on April 20th!
When Peachy goes to a restaurant new to her that is bragging about their wine and they don't create their own wine, they have Jesus to thank for setting the bar so high that we ask this question. Yes, he makes his own olive oil and his own wine in his native Spain and this is another distinguishing characteristic of his phenomenal success at Alcala that is exclusively to make your dinner better.
Another special the day we visited is the totally majestic Grilled Salmon with Scalloped Potatoes. The greenery will give you a happy spring fever and the Salmon itself is grilled to absolute perfection emanating succulence. Extraordinarily delicious Scalloped Potatoes are hiding underneath the fish and it is kind of like going on an Easter Egg hunt to find the potatoes with your fork.
Marinated anchovies in sherry vinegar (Boquerones en Vinagre) offer a thrilling festive feast to embellish your culinary ventures at Alcala.
Note we do not edit pictures.
Everything is as vividly delicious as you see here.
Arroz Con Leche is a creamy rice pudding with cinnamon that is light and just the right touch for spring, but the real home run hitter is the Tarta de Manzana, below. The warm apple tart tatin with natillas and spanish brandy sauce might have even had a shorter life within close proximity to Peachy than the garlic shrimp. Actions speak louder than words, readers! Close it with a wonderful cappuccino.
Alcala continues to be Highly Recommended and it is one of Peachy's favorites right now!
